AN ANALYSIS OF THE 1963 PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME “BUST” POSTCARDS |
As autograph collectors, we are always searching for items to get signed by our favorite players or members of Halls of Fame we decide to collect. It’s especially fun when an official issue of a Hall of Fame is made public, and after securing the items, attempt to get them autographed.
This article will address a seldom seen issue from the Pro Football Hall of Fame: the set of six bust postcards of charter enshrinees into the Hall of Fame. I will attempt to trace the history of these postcards and provide a description of each. I will conclude with a discussion of signed cards in existence and some general speculation about them.
The charter class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame consists of 17 members who were selected on December 29, 1963. The induction ceremonies were held the following year on September 7, 1963. Eleven of the enshrinees were present at those ceremonies: Dutch Clark, Curly Lambeau, Mel Hein, John “Blood” McNally, Don Hutson, Sammy Baugh, Cal Hubbard, Bronko Nagurski, George Halas, Red Grange and Ernie Nevers.
